Weekend Events: Tahdig Tacos, Cheech’s Chicano Art Museum, LBC Taco Festival, and The First LGBTQ+ Mariachi Band

We can’t bear the thought of you being bored this weekend. So we’ve cobbled together an events guide highlighting some of the fun things to do in and around Los Angeles over the next few days. Have fun!

THURSDAY, JUNE 16

• If you've ever dreamed of spending an hour or two of life immersed in Frida Kahlo's life and work, your ship has come in. The Immersive Frida Exhibit is open in Hollywood, featuring 500,000-feet of video projections covering the walls and floor with the great artist's paintings and story. • Catalan dancer, choreographer, and performance artist Marta Carrasco is presenting her original expressionist work "Perra De Nadie" ("Nobody's Bitch")  at Downtown's Latino Theater Company through June 26. The performance, which contains no dialogue, is explained like this, despite likely defying definition: "In the deepest part of everyone, where the underworld of vulnerability, madness, tenderness and fragility exist, lives Lili and her night watchmen, and her endearing vastness blooms." • You're in the high desert. It's hot. But you see an oasis in sight. It's Hoja Blanca, a new modern Mexican restaurant in Palm Springs from Omar and Arnold Limon, who have brought their pop-up to a brick-and-mortar space at Flannery Exchange, featuring Bluefin tostadas with tamari-miso dressing and salsa macha; aguachile with salsa negra and grapes; and a prime rib filet with a burnt eggplant mole, cilantro chimichurri, and pink peppercorns.

FRIDAY, JUNE 17

• Producer, motivational speaker, and author Trey Anthony is bringing her “Black Girl in Love (With Herself)”: You Can’t Shame The Shameless book tour to L.A. on June 17 and 18th at the WACO Theater Center, with the goal of getting you laughing, and maybe crying just a little bit, too. 7:30-10:30pm, tickets here, 5144 Lankershim Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 91601
• Dance DTLA, a free night of guided dance lessons to DJs and live local bands at Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center in Downtown, will focus on salsa music with DJ Aragon and instructor Leslie Ferreira this Friday night, followed by nights dedicated to hip-hop, Bollywood, cumbia, and more. 7-11pm, 135 N. SATURDAY, JUNE 18

• Open Market is collaborating with Perilla LA chef Jihee Kim for its ongoing chef-collab sandwich series. Jihee is imagining a Korean-Italian Deli sandwich would be like, channeling Bay Cities in a sandwich with thinly sliced galbi-marinated pork shoulder, with slaw banchan, Kewpie, and provolone between a Clark Street baguette. 11am-3pm, pre-orders can be placed online, 3339 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90010 

• Tahdig Tacos, a San Diego-and-OC-based food truck fusing Persian and Mexican culinary influences into such lavosh-bookended, halal creations as birra tahdig and fesenjan "tacos," is finally appearing in L.A. for the afternoon, posting up at Chili John's in Burbank. 12:30-7:30pm, 2018 Burbank Blvd. Burbank, CA 91506

• The Broad is kicking off its "Summer Happenings" series on Friday with "Now We're Here," featuring an all-LGBTQ and Latinx lineup of artists/performers encompassing the worlds of pop, hip-hop, electronic, spoken word, and more, including a vinyl set from the artist and DJ known as Cocteautwinks and the return of Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, dubbed "the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi band." SUNDAY, JUNE 19

• The California African American Museum will celebrate Black farmers, chefs, and entrepreneurs at a Juneteenth edition of its Propserity Market pop-up in Exposition Park.  There will be a farmers market with crafts and prepared foods, a DJ, cooking demos, storytelling and art stations for families, raffles, and a sound bath. • Don't forget Father's Day. And don't forget that the three locations of coffee-and-pastry powerhouse Goodboy Bob (Culver City, Manhattan Beach, and Santa Monica) are offering steak & eggs chapatis with top sirloin, pickled jalapenos, hot sauce, Hooks cheddar, and eggs, along with a milk and cookies cake. The Santa Monica location will also have live music. We think you've got Dad's Day nailed.

• The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture's Saturday grand-opening is sold-out in Riverside, but tickets are still available for Sunday. The collection, in partnership with the famed comedian and actor, who is one of the world’s foremost collectors of Chicano art, will be the home to "hundreds of paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures" and will be an important destination for Chicano art. $10.95-15.95 tickets here, 3581 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside, CA, 92501

• It's time to get tickets for the California Wine Festival's July 15-16 two-day beachside tasting events in Santa Barbara, pairing winemakers from across California with gourmet eats from local purveyors, live entertainment, and life-affirming seaside breezes. Friday night will focus on the wine-centric “Sunset Rare & Reserve Tasting” and Saturday will be a daytime event by the sand with California’s top wineries, local restaurants, regional craft brews, live bands, and vendors.
